The History of T&C Surf Designs

To truly appreciate this vintage piece, you have to look back at the origins of the brand. In T&C Surf Designs, the letters T&C stand for Town & Country. Founder Craig Sugihara opened the very first shop in 1971 inside an old barbershop in Pearl City, Hawaii.

Because Pearl City sits right in the middle of Oahu, it served as the perfect strategic midpoint for surfers traveling between the island's two major surfing epicenters: "Town" (the South Shore/Waikiki) and "Country" (the North Shore).

The Meaning Behind the Yin Yang Logo

The iconic logo design centers on the ancient symbol of the Yin Yang (太極 / Taiji), representing fluid harmony, balance, and interconnected dualities. In surf culture, the symbol holds a profound meaning: balancing the intense power and serenity of the ocean with the everyday rhythm of life on land.

Just as "Town" balances "Country," the Yin Yang graphic reflects the mindset every surfer carries into the water—finding calm amid nature's elements.

Preserving Your Pre-Owned Art Apparel

Whenever we add a vintage screen-printed piece to our personal rotation, we follow strict care steps to keep the cotton fibers and graphics in museum condition:

  1. Wash inside out on a cold, delicate cycle to prevent print friction.
  2. Line dry in the shade to protect the vibrant yellow fabric from sun fading.
  3. Never iron directly over graphics or screen prints.
